People of Assam get voter ID cards for the first time

In a major move, residents of Assam received their voter identity cards for the first time, who otherwise used to carry other documents on polling day to vote.

Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, lauded his government's efforts in providing voter cards to all sections of society, and termed it as a greatest success.

"It is definitely the greatest success in our tenure. We have been able to provide the voter identity card to everybody. So, it has given a little dignity and prestige to every individual. That is our greatest success, we have done," Gogoi said.

People of Guwahati were visibly happy to receive their cards, and hoped it will prove beneficial for them.

"I never had such an identity card. I am very happy and believe it will be of great help for me," said a resident, Tiluma Hira.

Residents say the voters card will also be used their personal identity card.

"We are very happy. Through this identity card, we can vote and can also use it as a personal identity card. This is for the first time we have got voter identity card," said another resident, Subhadra Gogoi.

India's mammoth parliamentary election will be held in nine stages, which will commence on April 7th, which coincides with raising day of separatist group, United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). Following this, security measures have been intensified for peaceful polling process during the first phase.
