Out-of-favour batsman Kevin Pietersen has launched a blistering tirade against England's hierarchy, describing his omission from the ongoing Ashes squad as 'ridiculous'.

"Deep in thought right now...ridiculous that I'm lying on a beach when I should be in UK prepping for the 3rd Test! So silly really! Sad!" he wrote on Twitter.

England suffered a humiliating 405-run defeat against Australia in the second Ashes Test at Lord's and consequently levelled the five-match series 1-1 in an imperious style.

Pietersen, a veteran of 104 Test and 136 one-day caps for England, has been out of the national squad since his central contract was cancelled by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following the team's Ashes washout by Australia in 2014.

The South African-born batsman's hopes of earning an England recall suffered a heavy blow, despite hitting an unbeaten triple ton for Surrey in county cricket in May, when new director of cricket Andrew Strauss told the maverick batsman that he would never play for his adopted country again.

Strauss cited a 'massive trust issue' between him and the sacked batsman as the reason behind the decision.

Earlier, incoming ECB chairman Colin Graves had stated that Pietersen could earn a recall to the national side again if he made enough runs in county cricket.

England will take on a buoyant Australian side in the third Test at Edgbaston on 29 July, with a possibility of a top-order regrouping.
