Former Olympic and Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius' prison sentence has been more than doubled to 13 years and five months for killing her girlfriend Reeva Steenmkamp.

Steenkamp "can now rest in peace," her family stated, after a South African high court announced the sentence, reported CNN.

Pistorius was imprisoned last July. He was found guilty of murder after he shot Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013 through a locked bathroom door, claiming he thought she was an intruder.

The prosecution called it a deliberate act after the two had an argument.

According to the reports, Pistorius originally was convicted of manslaughter in 2014 after months of hearings and sentenced to five years, but a higher court overturned the conviction and changed it to murder a year later.

The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years, however the disgraced Paralympian was sentenced him to six years in prison.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel argued that Pistorius' sentence was "shockingly lenient."

Under that initial sentence, the double-amputee runner could have been released on parole in mid-2019.

Now, the earliest he'll be eligible for parole is 2023.
