Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally here today , announced that effective from October, the minimum pension for all former Government of India employees would be Rs 1000.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said, "There are 32 lakh people who are former employees of the Government of India who used to get pensions ranging from Rs 50 to Rs 200. An old person who get such a low pension will never be able to lead a life of dignity, thus we took a decision that the minimum pension that can be given will be Rs 1000."

Stating that a stable, strong government that won the majority of the seats had been brought into power thanks to the voters, the Prime Minister further called for women to contribute to the development of the nation, saying, "Women should be able to live with dignity and contribute to the national workforce."

Prime Minister Modi also talked of the schemes that have been introduced for the benefit of farmers, saying, "It is due to the efforts of the farmers of our country that the rest of the country is able to eat. The rest of the country can eat their fill, but his pocket is never filled. Thus, we have started schemes to reverse this trend so that the farmer can live with pride."

The Prime Minister also talked of addressing the unemployment problem in the country, saying, "The youth want employment and if employed, this country will not be behind anybody as far as development is concerned and India is fortunate to have 65 per cent of its population under the age of 35 years. There is need for skill development to hone the ability of this youth. A degree alone will not be enough.
