Coming down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his 'intolerance' comment made at a joint media interaction in the UK, the Congress on Friday said that Modi owes an explanation wherever he goes as people look at him with a lot of suspicion.
"One good thing about PM visit is that he has to make a statement of this kind. I think probably in India he would not have made a statement like that. India is a democratic country. So, what is happening in India, he owes an explanation wherever he goes. Wherever he goes people look at him with lot of suspicion so he has to clear that," said Congress leader P.C. Chacko to ANI.
Further mocking the Prime Minister and the BJP, Chacko said that the latter is playing havoc with the lives of the people.
He has to make a statement because this fundamentalist group, that is encouraged by the BJP, is playing havoc with the lives of the public. This needs an explanation from the PM," he added.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in the United Kingdom yesterday on a three day visit. He has since had delegation-level talks, addressed the British Parliament and the City of London, met representatives of the Sikh community and paid homage before a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Prime Minister said, there is no place for intolerance in India. Describing India as the land of Gandhi and Buddha, he said India never tolerates anything against its fundamental values. Law deals strictly with such issues and will keep doing so.
He said, it does not matter whether such an incident is significant for a country of 125 crore people. For us, every incident is serious.
