Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to his predecessor Lal Bahadur Shastri on his 111th birth anniversary.
"I bow to the proud son of India, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary," PM Modi tweeted.
"Shastri ji is remembered for his simplicity & integrity. His firm leadership during testing times became a major asset for our nation," he added.
Prime Minister Modi further said, "We remain eternally inspired by Shastri ji's clarion call of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' & are working determinately for the welfare of the farmer & the soldier."
Shastri was India's second prime minister and was in office from June 9, 1964 to January 11, 1966.
He was the first person to be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna. A memorial "Vijay Ghat" was built for him in New Delhi.
