Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a two-day of Bangladesh, visited the National Martyrs' Memorial and paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.
During his visit to the memorial, the Prime Minister Modi observed a minute of silence in memory of the martyred, signed the visitor's book and planted a sapling before leaving for the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.
Prime Minister Modi's office took to Twitter to share information about his visit.
"Beginning the visit by paying homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War of 1971," it tweeted.
"Foundation Stone for Jatiyo Smriti Shoudho was laid by Bangabandhu himself. Design was chosen from various entries obtained in a competition," it added.
"The Memorial consists of 7 distinct triangles indicating 7 stages of the national movement of Bangladesh that led to its Independence," it said in a series of tweets.

"Memorial gives impression of rising from the ashes like a phoenix. It symbolises courage and determination of people," it added.
Earlier, he was received by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on his arrival in Dhaka and was also accorded a Guard of Honour.
The National Martyrs' Memorial or Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho is the symbol in the memory of the valour and the sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, which brought independence and separated Bangladesh from Pakistan.
Located in Savar, the monument was designed by Syed Mainul Hossain.
It is composed of seven isosceles triangular pyramid shaped structures, with the middle one being the tallest. The highest point of the monument is 150 feet. There are several mass graves in front of the main monument besides a Green house, PWD site office, VVIP and VIP waiting room inside the area.
