PM Modi to address NEC meeting in Shillong today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the North Eastern Council (NEC) meeting in Shillong today and will also release a special cover and a stamp brought out by the Department of Posts to mark the occasion.

Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh yesterday inaugurated the two-day Plenary Meeting of North Eastern Council, which is being attended by Governors and Chief Ministers of all the eight States of North Eastern region.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that in the last two years under the NDA government, the North Eastern Region has witnessed path-breaking development in all spheres of life.

He said that the visit by the Prime Minister also assumes special significance because after nearly three decades a Prime Minister will attend the meeting of NEC.

The North Eastern Council is the nodal agency of the Ministry of Development for North Eastern Region that comprises of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

It was constituted in 1971 which marked the beginning of a new chapter of concerted and planned endeavour for the rapid development of the Region.

Over the last thirty five years, NEC has been instrumental in setting in motion a new economic endeavour aimed at removing the basic handicaps that stood in the way of normal development of the region.
