Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Atul Anjan said here on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must appeal to the United Nations Security Council to meet to discuss the current situation in Iraq.

Criticising the Indian Government for its failure to bring back stranded Indians from Iraq, Anjan said, "The current situation in Iraq is worsening day-by-day, but the government of India is not doing anything to rescue the stranded Indians. This government has proved to be a failure on many issues, and here also, it has failed.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, there are 100 Indians stranded in the conflict zone, along with 46 Indian nurses in Tikrit.

Overall, there are nearly 10,000 Indians in Iraq as per official figures. However, with many Indians being there without legal documents, the actual number runs much higher.

Iraq is witnessing serious strife with Sunni militants, backed by the Al Qaeda, marching towards the capital Baghdad. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been displaced in the fighting that broke out on June 10.
