The Police came under attack from angry people who protested over a 25-year-old youth getting killed in a road accident here on Tuesday.
The incident took place when the deceased, identified as Sabir Sheikh, was returning from a market, a speeding truck ran over him killing him on the spot at Jalangi in Old Malda.
In protest, villagers blocked the National Highway 34 for several hours. People became angry and started throwing stones on the police persons and damaged a police van.
The police baton charged the mob and fired four rounds of bullets in the sky.
Malda OC traffic Manabendra Saha was injured in the incident along with other police officials.
Till last reports came in no arrest has been made. Meanwhile, the dead body has been shifted to the nearest hospital for post-mortem.
