Metro services in Kolkata were suspended for 27 minutes on Tuesday following aftershocks emanating from a second earthquake in Nepal.
R.N. Mahapatra, the chief public relations officer of the Eastern Railways, said, "As soon as we felt that there is an earthquake, we immediately stopped the metro services. We made frequent announcements at all 24 metro stations from the central control room. We appealed to passengers to vacate the trains for security reasons and they all cooperated with the metro authority."
Mahapatra further said, "We stopped the service from 12.48 to 13.15 hours. We had a thorough inspection of the metro tracks, walls and the roofs. When section clearance was received, then only we started resume the services from 13:15 hours."
According to reports, schools were closed after quake in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri District.
Earlier in the day, Nepal was hit by an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, which was followed by several aftershocks, including one that measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.
Tuesday's earthquake occurred a fortnight after a quake had claimed over 7000 lives and devastated the Himalayan nation.
