Sania Mirza, who created history by becoming the world number one in tennis doubles, was congratulated heartily by politicos on twitter.
"Hats off to the outstanding @MirzaSania for attaining world number one ranking in one of the toughest, competitive, gruelling sport of all," said Congress leader Sanjay Jha.
"After Saina Nehwal in Badminton, congrats to Sania Mirza on becoming world number 1 of women's doubles Tennis with Martina Hingis," added Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also congratulated Mirza while recalling the feat of Badminton player Saina Nehwal, who also hit the number one rankings earlier this week.
"First @NSaina in singles.Now @MirzaSania in doubles. Badminton and tennis World Number 1. Congratulations. You both make us proud," said Mamata.
Former cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirti Azad also lauded the tennis ace, saying another daughter of India had made the country proud.

Sania and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis achieved the numero uno rankings after beating the Aussie-Croation pair of Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak 6-0, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Family Circle Cup.
