President Mukherjee condoles passing away of veteran journalist K.K. Katyal

President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday condoled the passing away of veteran journalist K.K. Katyal, who died at the age of 88.

In a condolence message to his wife, Darshan Katyal, the President said, "I am sad to learn about the passing away of Shri K.K. Katyal.

"Katyal was a much loved and admired personality in the world of media. He had a long and distinguished career, especially with "The Hindu", "The Statesman" and "Hindustan Times," he added.

President Mukherjee also said that Katyal was widely travelled and had extensive contacts in political and diplomatic circles, adding that his services as President of the South Asia Free Media Association will be remembered by members of the media across the region.

"Katyal made important contribution to making the newspapers he worked for symbols of excellence in journalism. In his death, the nation has lost an outstanding and veteran journalist who will continue to be a source of inspiration to the younger generation of journalists," he added.

President Mukherjee extended his heartfelt condolences to Katyal's wife and his family.

"I pray to the Almighty to give you and other members of the family strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss," he said.

The 88-year-old scribe is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Katyal had worked with various newspapers including The Statesman, Hindustan Times and The Hindu, where he had joined just after Emergency and retired on superannuation as Associate Editor in 2004.

He had a stint with United States Information Services as well.
