Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA) are reportedly in discussions with each other to play their next epic Test series over four matches for the Kallis-Ponting trophy.

The two teams, who occupy No.2 and No.1 respectively on the ICC's Test rankings, have staged some memorable games over the past 20 years although their rivalry has always been limited to three-Test battles in the post-apartheid era.

According to News.com.au, CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat confirmed his organisation and CA were in advanced discussions about breaking the trend, although he added that it is dependant on the calendar.

The report mentioned that both the teams are next scheduled to square off in Australia over October-November 2016.

CA chairman Wally Edwards was upbeat the two sporting bodies could find space for a four-Test series, saying that it is necessary to recognise the quality of the cricket.

Lorgat and Edwards thrashed out the issue during last week's series decider in Cape Town, and also the prospect of giving the series added gravitas with a new name like the Kallis-Ponting trophy and proper piece of silverware.
