Sam Querrey of America came out with a stupendous performance to shock fourteen-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal in the Mexican Open final.
Querrey, who had lost all four previous meetings with the Spaniard, changed that the back of a strong serving display and power hitting and defeated the second seed 6-3 7-6 (7-3) on Saturday.
The 29-year-old, who became the first American champion in the history of the event, fired 19 aces to win his ninth career title.
In the lead up to the summit clash, he had ousted fifth-seeded David Goffin, fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem, sixth-seeded Nick Kyrgiosn reports Sport24.
The Spaniard, who had won the tournament in 2005 and 2013, was on a 14-match winning streak before this game.
In women's singles, Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko defeated second-seed Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-1, 7-5 to win her third career title.
