Radix, Asia's largest new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) applicant in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) has announced the launch of the General Availability period for its first India-centric domain, .in.net to the public for registration.

The general availability corresponds to the opening of the .in.net namespace to the general public. All available .in.net domain names can now be registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

.in.net is a unique opportunity - offering registrants a new experience in the branding of their online presence. The .in.net extension caters to Indian individuals, businesses based in India as well as India-focused businesses.

Sandeep Ramchandani, Business Head - .in.net said "This is a great opportunity for Indian individuals and businesses to grab a short, memorable and affordable name that is exclusive to India. We are pleased to offer our customers the possibility to register .in.net domain names and thus acquire a competitive edge. For example, instead of registering flowersellers-india.in or .com, people can now register flowers.in.net."

The General Availability Registration Period follows the recent completion of the Landrush and TM Claims period, during which customers could pre-register for generic, premium names and brand names could block their trademark domains to prevent cybersquatting.

As per estimates by Boston Consulting Group, India's internet population is expected to nearly triple from 125 million in 2011 to 330 million by 2016. The number of domain names in the country is expected to increase at a faster pace as more businesses look to setup their online presence to tap the vast Indian internet population.
