Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the occasion of 17th Kargil Vijay Diwas paid homage to the slain Indian Army soldiers, glorifying their sacrifices made during the three-month long war.

The Home Minister took to the Micro blogging site twitter and said, "I salute the supreme sacrifice & exemplary courage of our soldiers who laid down their lives in Kargil war. They are our nation's true heroes,"

Meanwhile other Cabinet Ministers along with political leaders also paid tribute to the brave hearts of the Kargil war.

"Remembering the heroes of Kargil war victory for their bravery and sacrifice. I join the Nation in saluting them," said Defence Minister Parrikar

"My salute to the victorious Kargil war heroes who sacrificed their lives for our motherland. #kargilvijaydiwas," said Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

"Paying tribute today to the brave soldiers who gave up their lives for the nation.Your sacrifice can never be forgotten #KargilVijayDiwas," tweeted Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

Echoing similar sentiment, earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the sacrifices of India's soldiers, saying that the nation will never forget the fearlessness with which the soldiers gave a befitting and unforgettable reply to the intruders.

"On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I bow to every valiant soldier who fought for India till the very last breath. Their heroic sacrifices inspire us. India will never forget the fearlessness with which our courageous soldiers gave a befitting and unforgettable reply to the intruders," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

Indian and Pakistani armies fought the Kargil War in May-July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LoC).

India launched 'Operation Vijay' to clear the Kargil sector of infiltration by the Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants on the Indian side of the Line of Control.

The day is observed on July 26 every year in honour of the Kargil War Heroes.

From a strategic standpoint, Kargil is noted as being one of the most recent instances of high-altitude warfare in mountainous terrain - something that usually provides a major challenge to both sides.
