The Rotract Club of Green City (RCGM) Mumbai, through a cyclothon, has raised funds for the free surgery of new born children suffering from Congenital Heart Diseases (CHD).

The event, which was initiated in association with the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, saw over 200 cyclists, including senior citizens, raise Rs 23 lakh for the benefit of the children on Sunday.

"I highly appreciate the RCGM's efforts in spreading awareness about CHD and helping out the children in need of operations. I was up since 4 a.m. and was looking forward to be here to support this remarkable cause," Bollywood actor Javed Jaffery, who flagged off the event, said.

Congenital Heart Diseases (CHD) is reportedly one of the leading causes of death among infants in India, with eight to ten children in 1000 born with this defect. Only a fourth of those born with the condition are said to be diagnosed and treated.
