A real life castaway, who was left adrift for 13 months in Pacific, has revealed that his faith in God helped him survive the ordeal.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga told CNN that he ardently believed that he would get out of his situation one day.

Alvarenga asserted that despite his faith, there were moments when he considered committing suicide by slitting his throat with a knife.

He added that one day he gave up and actually grabbed a knife when he didn't have water and food, but he couldn't go through with it as he was too scared.

Alvarenga was found in emaciated condition on the tiny Ebon Atoll in the Marshall Islands, after having drifted more than 8,000 miles.
