Bale set up Cristiano Ronaldo to tap in, James Rodriguez posted a fourth while Karim Benzema hit a late fifth. Derlis Gonzalez scored for Basel.
The victory comes as a welcome revival for manager Carlo Ancelotti after Real made a disappointing start to the season in La Liga.
The win has put the Spanish team on top of Group B, level on points with Liverpool after they defaeted Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad 2-1 at Anfield.
