South Africa skipper AB de Villiers will miss the upcoming one-off ODI match against Ireland as he has failed to recover fully from left elbow injury sustained in August.

Confirming the news, team manager Dr. Mohammed Moosajee said that although de Villiers had been on a rigorous rehabilitation and treatment plan from the last six weeks, he is still complaining pain in the elbow region.

Moosajee revealed the Cricket South Africa (CSA) medical committee had, therefore, recommended a few more days of rehab for de Villiers to give the injury more time to recover.

"He will undergo treatment this week with our physiotherapist, Brandon Jackson, and a final call on his availability for the first ODI against Australia will be subject to him passing a fitness test. While surgery remains the last option, we hope that the extra time will allow the injury to respond to treatment," Moosajee was quoted as saying by Sport24.

Earlier, de Villiers missed the two-match Test series against New Zealand due to the injury, which was the first time he has missed a Test match because of injury since his debut in 2004.

With his omission, Faf du Plessis will once again lead the team against Ireland at Sahara Park Willowmoore in Benoni on Sunday , while Rilee Rossouw has been added in the squad as batting cover for de Villiers'.
