Family members of Aruna Shanbaug and staff of Mumbai's King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital attended the last rites of the nurse who had been in a vegetative state for the past 42 years on Monday.
Shanbaug was brutally raped by a ward boy in 1973. Her last rites were performed at the Bhoiwada Samsaan Bhoomi in Mumbai's Parel area this evening.
Shanbaug breathed her last at Mumbai's King Edward Memorial Hosipital this morning.
Shanbaug had been in critical condition over the past month. She was suffering from pneumonia and was on ventilator support.
