Relief work launched on war footing in nine rain-hit Andhra districts

The flood situation in most parts of Andhra Pradesh is said to be still very grim, even as the Godavari River has begun receding in the North Telangana region.

Media reports said over 200 villages have been severely affected by the incessant rains.

Though the waters of the River Godavari are receding, the rivulets and streams are in spate posing threat to several island villages down stream.

Meanwhile, relief operations are on in nine rain-hit districts.

Two Indian Air Force helicopters have been pressed into service to provide relief material like food and drinking water to the affected areas.

Road and communication links of several villages in Andhra Pradesh have been cut off due to overflowing streams and tanks.

Several long distance trains that travel through the state are running late due to diversions in other states.

Irrigation and revenue officials are continuously monitoring the flood situation in an effort to tackle any eventuality.eople from low lying areas are being evacuated. So far, 15000 people have been accommodated in 74 relief camps set up at various districts.
