Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo reportedly won his first race in a thrilling Canadian Grand Prix after passing Nico Rosberg's crippled Mercedes with two laps to go to the finish line.

Rosberg, whose teammate retired with a break failure and is now 22 points behind in the championship, reportedly held on to take second ahead of Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, helped by a last-lap safety car following a crash between Force India's Sergio Perez and Williams' Felipe Massa.

According to the BBC, Hamilton had taken the lead during the second pit-stop after Rosberg got delayed by a problem fitting a front wheel at his stop, but on the very next lap the Englishman ran wide at the hairpin, a symptom of the total brake failure that he was about to experience at the next corner.

Rosberg reportedly took the lead as a result and although Perez closed up, closely tracked by the Red Bulls, he was unable to pass, as he too was managing fading brakes.

However, Ricciardo began to apply pressure to Perez and passed him around the outside into Turn One with four laps to go and the Australian quickly closed on Rosberg and passed him down the long final straight on lap 68 of 70.

Ricciardo said that he is still in shock, adding that the race came to life during the last 15, 20 laps and they saw Hamilton had a problem and then Rosberg was slow on the straights.

The Australian added that he was struggling get past Perez and finally got a run out of the last chicane and got the Mexican into Turn One and then a couple of laps to go he found himself in the right spot to get the DRS.
