Richard Attenborough's son recently revealed that his father could barely speak after the stroke hit him in 2008.
The film legend fell at his home after a stroke in 2008 and was confined to a wheelchair, the Mirror reported.
It was known that the Academy Award winner and his wife Sheila Sim moved from the house in Richmond, South West London, into a care home in 2012, but the family kept the full extent of his injuries quiet.
Theatre director Michael, said that the 'Jurassic Park' actor hit his head very badly and he have no idea how he survived the accident but when he emerged after 18 months in hospital, he was obviously not the same man.
The two things it was terrible to take away from his dad were his activity and articulation and he couldn't read and write, while he first came out of hospital he seemed hugely frustrated but in the last 18 months he was much more resigned.
Michael confirmed the family would hold a private funeral in the next week and a memorial service for friends in November.
