Former Welsh football player Robbie Savage has been rushed to hospital after falling seriously ill on a charity trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

According to the Mirror, Savage expressed that he was absolutely gutted that he did not make it to the top and he thought that his head was going to explode, adding that he felt dizzy and could not breathe.

Doctors diagnosed the former Premier League star with fluid on the lung and critical levels of oxygen in the blood, the report said.

He explained that there were no problems until they got to 3,000m, when he was sick and got a crunching headache, adding that he did not want to give up, and so pushed on to the next camp at 3,600m but crashed out with a headache and sickness.

He added that he had then pushed on to the next camp at 4,300m but it got worse and he was told that if he had actually done so, he could have been seriously ill and died.

It took eight hours to evacuate the former Strictly star, a fundraiser for a gambling charity, the report added.
