England football team manager Roy Hodgson believes that his key striker and Manchester united star Wayne Rooney is determined to prove himself at this year's World Cup in Brazil after two previous indifferent campaigns.

After scoring four goals as an 18-year-old at Euro 2004, Rooney is yet to find the net in the eight World Cup matches that he has played since the 2006, reports the BBC.

His campaign in the 2006 World Cup in germany ended with a red card for stamping on Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho in a quarter-final defeat, while in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he turned in a series of indifferent performances.

Hodgson believes that Rooney knows how good player he is, and knows that as a football nation, England places a lot of faith in him.

Rooney is currently training in Portugal after taking a week off.

Hodgson's team take on Peru in a friendly at Wembley on May 30 and go to Miami for matches against Ecuador and Honduras before their opening World Cup game against Italy in Manaus on June 14.

England also face a group encounter with Uruguay on June 19, before meeting Costa Rica on June 24.
