Russia has planned to sign a new agreement to ship at least 10 MiG-29 M/M2 fighter jets to Syria.

MiG's Director General, Sergei Korotkov, said that Russia is providing weapons to Bashar al-Assad's government intended to protect Syria from foreign invasion, reported News 24.

The MiG-29 M/M2 fighters is an advanced version of the MiG 29 twin-engine fighter jet and has been a mainstay of Soviet and Russian Air Force since mid-1980s, the report added.

However, Korotkov claimed that Russia is not supplying weapons, which could be used for Syrian civil war that has continued for two years, claiming 70,000 lives.

According to the report, Moscow has shipped billions of dollars' worth of missiles, combat jets, tanks, artillery and other military gear to Syria over more than four decades.
