Russia has denied parole to a jailed member of punk band Pussy Riot from her two-year sentence for protesting against President Vladimir Putin in a Moscow church.

She had appealed to a regional court in Perm, in the Ural Mountains, after a district court denied the request.

According to the BBC, Alyokhina, who has a young son, has served more than a year of her sentence for breaching public order during the protest.

Another member of the punk group is still in prison and a third had her sentence suspended last year.

Critics accused the Russian authorities of punishing the women for their boisterous protests against the policies of President Vladimir Putin.

They were convicted of breaching public order motivated by religious hatred for performing a Punk Prayer in Christ The Saviour Cathedral in February 2012, the report added.
