Two female Russian athletes kissed on the winners podium to protest against Russia's anti-gay law.

The podium kiss has led to further attention on Russia's harsh new homosexuality laws.

According to stuff.co.nz, Russian runners Kseniya Ryzhova and Tatyana Firova kissed on the podium after winning the 4x400 meter relay at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow.

Sources in the Russia team camp downplayed the incident, saying it was simply a celebration and there were no politics involved.

The report said that Gay Star News pointed out that the kiss could lead to the pair being arrested under Russia's controversial new 'gay propaganda' laws as it could be promoting homosexuality.
