Former Welsh government minister Carl Sargeant has been found dead days after he was removed from the cabinet amid allegations of misconduct.

Sargeant was sacked from his post as cabinet secretary for communities and children on Friday, reported the Guardian.

The 49-year-old was found dead at his home in Connah's Quay in North Wales.

North Wales police stated that the death was not being treated as suspicious.

Carwyn Jones, the Welsh First Minister, said that Sargeant was being investigated over a "number of incidents" after women came forward with allegations.

According to reports, Sargeant, a married father-of-two at that time said that he found the allegations "shocking and distressing" and called for an independent investigation "to allow me to clear my name".

"We are devastated beyond words, and we know our grief will be shared by all those who knew and loved him. We are in shock and grief. We ask that our privacy is respected at this time," read a family statement.
