Sahara chief Subrata Roy surrenders before UP police

Sahara chief Subrata Roy surrendered before the Lucknow police on Friday.

Roy's legal counsel Ram Jethmalani has confirmed that his client has surrendered before the police. Roy will remain in police custody till March 4.

"On February 28 morning, as a law-abiding citizen, he willfully decided to surrender before UP police," Roy's son Seemanto Roy told reporters in a press conference held here.

"Sahara India Parivar has always put nation ahead of business interest. In times of crisis we have always remained strong in times of crisis," he said.

Seemanto said, "We are committed to abide by the law. Subrata Roy is the patriotic son of the soil. We are fighting an ongoing legal battle and are confident that it will arrive at a logical conclusion soon."

"Sahara shri is not only a doting father for me but also a patriot son of soil, pains me to see his image being maligned," he added.

Earlier, Roy issued a statement where he said that he was not absconding arrest and was indeed in Lucknow.

He also requested the Supreme Court to put him under house arrest with his ailing mother in Lucknow.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a non-bailable warrant against Subrata Roy after he failed to appear in connection with a case in which his company was directed to return Rs. 20,000 crore to investors.
