Sajjan Kumar was leading the mob and provoking them, eyewitness Joginder Singh told the Patiala House Court while recording his statement in connection with a case relating to the Sultanpuri incident during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

"When I went to lodge an FIR, the police denied naming Sajjan Kumar in the complaint. Kumar was the person leading the mob and provoking them," Singh told a single judge bench presided by District Judge Poonam Bamba.

Singh, who had lost his brother during the riots, was being represented by advocate Tarannum Cheema. After recording Singh's statement, Judge Bamba posted the matter for hearing on April 9 and fixed April 11 as the date for cross-examination.

Earlier, witness Cham Kaur was cross-examined by Sajjan Kumar's lawyer on the last date of hearing on March 7 based on her statement.

Riots took place in 1984 riots targetting Sikhs in Sultanpuri area of Delhi, which, witnesses have claimed, was instigated by Sajjan Kumar.

The former Congress leader is serving a life term in the case relating to the death of five members of a family in Raj Nagar and the torching of a gurdwara in Delhi on November 1, 1984.
