Sanders urges supporters to embrace Clinton as Democratic presidential nominee

Bernie Sanders has asked his supporters to embrace Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.

Speaking that the Democratic Party convention in the Philadelphia Arena on Monday, Sanders made direct plea for calm to his 1,846 delegates in the arena, as they repeatedly jeered Clinton for the first few hours of the evening.

The Vermont senator urged his die-hard supporters to embrace Clinton.

"Any objective observer will conclude that based on her ideas and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States," The Guardian quoted Sanders, as saying.

First Lady Michelle Obama also delivered a powerful speech in which she rallied passionately behind Clinton.

"Because of Hillary Clinton, our daughters and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be the president of the United States," said Michelle Obama.

"In this election we cannot sit back and hope that everything works out for the best ... Between now and November, we need to do what we did eight years ago and four years ago..We need to pour every last ounce of our passion and our strength and our love for this country into electing Hillary Clinton as president of the United States of America," she added.

The First Lady called Clinton "the president I want for my girls" and someone "who knows that the world is not black and white and easily boiled down to 140 characters".

She reiterated that the only one person she trust with the responsibility to be president is Hillary Clinton.
