Once neglected because of militancy-related violence, Manipur is projecting itself as a hub of culture, adventure tourism and sports. In a recently concluded 10-day Sangai festival, the tourism department showcased the state's rich cultural heritage, bio-diversity and ethnicity.
The aim of the Sangai festival was to bring Manipur to the world tourism map.
The mega event was inaugurated on November 21 by Governor V. Shanmuganathan in the presence of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
The annual festival aims to promote Manipur as a world class tourism destination by showcasing art, culture, theatre, eco-adventure opportunities, sports and natural beauty.
"I thank the Tourism department, secretary, director, the entire staff who have worked tirelessly and all other department of the government of Manipur for working hard in organizing the Sangai festival 2015.I wish Sangai Festival a grand success," said Prithiviraj Singh, Parliamentary Secretary (Tourism).
The ten-day long cultural extravaganza, known earlier as Manipur Festival, was renamed Manipur 'Sangai Festival' in 2010 to popularize 'Sangai' - a rare species of deer found in the state.
