Saudi Arabia traffic police has fined several private car owners for allowing women to drive against the kingdom's rules.

An official said that no laws explicitly ban Saudi women from driving, but citizens must use locally issued licenses, which are not issued to women, making it illegal for them to drive, the Gulf News reports.

A total of six women were found defying the driving rules and the car owners were fined totalling 5,400 riyals for allowing an 'unqualified' person to drive, the report added.

The move comes three days after women activists called for a driving campaign next month to defy the longstanding ban on women driving in the kingdom.

An online petition entitled "October 26, driving for women" was signed on Monday by more than 5,800 signatories to push authorities to end the unique ban.
