The Supreme Court today adjourned the hearing on the issue of 'triple talaq' till September 6.
Hearing the batch of Public Interest Litigations (PIL), Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur observed that the issue of triple talaq was a serious one, and asked all respondents to frame legal issues concerning the matter.
The apex court has directed the Centre to file its response on the petitions within six weeks.
The apex court would also consider the need for setting up a larger bench of five judges to look into the issue.
While the Supreme Court has taken suo motu notice of 'triple talaq' and polygamy to examine its constitutional validity against the touchstone of gender parity, several Muslim women and organisations have filed PILs for and against the practice.
