The Supreme Court on Friday turned down an abortion plea filed by a 10-year-old rape survivor, who is 32 weeks pregnant.

The apex court rejected her plea observing that it is too late for her to abort now.

The top court passed this ruling on basis of the report filed by the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh which says that it is risky for the child to undergo abortion at such an advanced stage.

Earlier on July 24, the court issued notice to the Centre on a plea seeking permission to abort the 32-week-old foetus of the rape survivor.

The apex court asked the Member Secretary of the Chandigarh legal services authority to get the rape survivor examined at PGI Chandigarh.

India has a 20-week legal ceiling on abortion.
