Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Sunday said that the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will address most of the problems that are holding back the peace and prosperity in our respective countries.
"Today, globalisation and technological revolution have substantially reduced space, distance and time. I say this with immense satisfaction and full conviction. The discussions were meaningful and the sharing of ideas and best practices can certainly help in making development sustainable," Mahajan said, while addressing the closing ceremony of South Asian Speakers Summit.
She added that by arriving at the broader consensus in Dhaka in January last year and taking the threads forward in Indore, discussions made out ways in which parliaments can ensure that adequate financial and other resources accompany implementation of national and regional SDG strategies.
"The South Asia region, with 1.7 billion people, is the most densely populated geographical region of the world. A large number of people are still living in extreme poverty which continues to be major challenge for the policy makers," she added.
