Congress leader Jagdambika Pal on Monday criticized Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's comments made at a public rally in Pune on Sunday.

Rejecting outright Modi's view that the Congress-led UPA Government is hiding behind the veil of secularism during difficult times, Pal said: "He (Modi) wants to weaken secularism of the country because his political motive is communalism. But, it is this secularism that strengthens the unity and diversity of the country. In the coming days, secularism is the real answer to Narendra Modi's communal politics."

Pal also rubbished Modi for blaming the Congress for the present economic crisis and said that the BJP is responsible for the rupee's free fall.

"The rupee is falling, because in the past two years, the BJP has created many problems in the functioning of Parliament sessions. It has portrayed India as the most corrupt country, and because of this, corporate houses are setting their businesses abroad, and not in India. The BJP has even prevented foreign investment in India," he said

He also said that the BJP is not concerned about the growth or the future of the country and is only interested in useless politics.

Narendra Modi had addressed a public meeting in Pune on July 14, where he accused the Congress-led UPA Government of taking the people of the country for granted over the past 60 years. He also blamed the Congress for the deteriorating economic condition of the country, and specifically targeted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a great economist, for failing to prevent the free fall of the rupee.
