Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have seized heroin worth an estimated Rs.500 billion, which was being smuggled along India-Pakistan border in Amritsar, Punjab.

"Ten kilograms of heroin has been seized by the BSF worth Rs.500 billion in international market," said BSF Inspector General Ajay Kumar Tomar.

The official added the smugglers took advantage to darkness and managed to escape.

"Our officers were on duty at night when they heard some suspicious voices and saw some movement and challenged them. After they challenged them, the smugglers who were throwing heroin across the fence, our soldiers fired fifteen rounds but smugglers managed to cross the border towards Pakistan," said Tomar.

Drugs trade has been thriving in Punjab, which shares its international border with Pakistan.

Increasing seizures indicate that the state is on a new and dangerous high on drugs.

The international border is fenced with barbed wire and under the vigil of security forces round the clock.
