In a bid to ensure free and fair general elections, police has stepped up security arrangements in Assam to foil any attempt to disrupt the democratic process.
Security personnel were seen manning the streets and checking vehicles in Jorhat city. The state government has also sought cooperation from neighbouring states for security arrangements.
Superintendent of Police of Jorhat, Amarjeet Kaur, said they have planned for adequate security plan at 907 polling stations.
"In Jorhat District, we have 907 polling stations and, we have planned for adequate security of those polling stations. We will be deploying the required amount of armed police as well. We have got eight companies of Sikkim Armed Police from outside for the election duty. And, we will be deploying force with our sector officers and zonal officers as well. We have divided the entire district into 11 zones and for each zone we have an inspector and above rank zonal officer and we will be deploying armed component with them," said Kaur.
India's mammoth parliamentary election will be held in nine stages from April 7, which is also the raising day of the separatist United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) group.
Following this, security measures have been intensified for peaceful polling process during the first phase.
