China reportedly has not given any congratulatory messages to the Japanese capital of Tokyo over its winning the bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics as a bitter diplomatic feud continues over uninhabited islets claimed by both the countries.
According to The Japan Times, Tokyo's selection to host in 2020 came just days before the first anniversary of the feud that erupted when Japan effectively nationalized the Senkaku Islands, which China calls Diaoyu and Taiwan claims as Tiaoyutai.
Refusing to say whether congratulations would be forthcoming, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei just stated that the government has noted the decision by the International Olympic Committee (to award Tokyo the bid to host the 2020 Games).
However, the report said that a Communist Party newspaper in China offered its congratulations to Tokyo, albeit in an article that noted the worsening conditions of the Sino-Japanese relationship.
The report further said that the dispute between the two nations saw violent anti-Japanese riots erupt in several Chinese cities last year and Beijing dispatched patrol vessels to confront Japanese ships in the area, although Chinese President Xi Jinping held a polite conversation with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the G20 Summit held in Russia recently.
