South Korea is trying to end the stalled talks between Washington and Pyongyang on denuclearisation after the Hanoi summit held between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un last month ended without an agreement.
On Monday, Seoul's Presidential Blue House issued a statement saying that the time was now right for the two Koreas to hold further talks, reports South China Morning Post.
"We agree with the view that no deal is better than a bad deal. However, in reality, it is difficult to achieve complete denuclearisation at one stroke," the statement quoted a high ranking official as saying.
According to the Blue House statement, South Korea wanted North to "agree with a broad road map aimed to achieve the overarching goal of denuclearization."
"On the basis of that, we should make further efforts to turn a small deal into a deal that is good enough. In order to achieve meaningful progress, we need one or two early harvests for mutual trust-building to move on toward the final goal," the statement further added.
In last month's Hanoi summit Trump had informed the media that Pyongyang wanted the sanctions to be lifted in their entirety which could not be done. Hence, they had to walk away from it.
North Korea, however, contradicted this with the country's Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho saying that they had made realistic proposals and asked for a partial lifting of sanctions. Following this, North had threatened the US of suspending all channels of communication and even restart its missile tests.
