The registrar of Jadavpur University, Pradip Ghosh, on Wednesday said the varsity has begun its internal inquiry into the sexual harassment case.

He also said that the university will extend its full support to the local police.

"Even I got to know from the press that such a complaint has been lodged at the Jadavpur police station. As far as my knowledge goes, there was no complaint made to the registrar's office, dean of students' office or Vice Chancellor's office and till now we have not received any complaint," Ghosh said.

"After hearing from the press, we contacted the Jadavpur Police Station. They told us that they have already initiated an inquiry. We will give full support to the police," he added.

When asked as to what action the university will take against the accused, he said, "Unless we get any first hand report, we cannot take any action."

The incident reportedly took place on August 28 when a second-year student was dragged by a group of students to the boys' hostel and molested. The victim lodged an FIR on Tuesday after recovering from the trauma.
