While hearing the Tamil Nadu trust vote case, the Supreme Court on Tuesday appointed Solicitor General Ranjeet Kumar to look into the matter.

The Apex court will hear the matter next on August 9.

This comes after Attorney General K.K. Venugopal last week recused himself from the matter.

The plea filed by AIADMK MLA K. Pandiarajan, considered to be close to former chief minister O. Panneerselvam, sought to set aside the trust vote in State Assembly on grounds that MLAs had voted "under distress".

Venugopal in the last hearing told the court that he had given a legal opinion to Panneerselvam faction of the AIADMK, post which the court told the former to inform Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar about the same.

"Inform the solicitor general about the recusal. Ask him to assist in the matter," the bench comprising of Justices Dipak Misra and A.M. Khanwilkar said.

The apex court had on July 5 sought the attorney general's assistance to examine the AIADMK MLA's plea.
