Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday sought the support of parliamentary parties as he headed into a consultative meeting with the aim of ending the ongoing political crisis.
Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMap) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai and other parliamentary leaders were present at the meeting held in the Prime Minister House today, reports the Dawn.
They reiterated their support for the continuation of the present democratic setup, and agreed that dialogue was the only way to resolve the crisis.
They also discussed the formation of a jirga comprising opposition lawmakers to end the stalemate between the government and the protesting Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).
PTI and PAT have been staging sit-ins in Islamabad since August 14 and have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Sharif whose government they call is the outcome of a rigged election held last year.
