Sheffield United declared that the decision to allow former player and convicted rapist Ched Evans to use their training facilities has been withdrawn.

The club stated that they vehemently denounce violence against women in the strongest possible terms. They further said that they didn't anticipate the extensive criticism it received for its decision to allow Evans to train at the club, the BBC reported.

In view of disappointment of the supporters over the decision to permit Evans to use the training facilities at the club, the club has come to a decision to retract the opportunity given to Evans after consulting supporters, officials, staff and sponsors.

Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill has announced that she want her name to be taken off the stands if the club resigns him. In the wake of club's decision to permit Evans to return to training, TV presenter Charlie Webster, 60s pop star Dave Berry and Sheffield businesswoman Lindsay Graham have all resigned as patrons of the club.

Evans was released from prison last month after completing half of a five-year sentence for the rape of a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room in 2011.
