Former Delhi chief minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday appeared to indicate her support for allowing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form a government in the national capital, if it was able to prove its majority in the Delhi Assembly.

"If there is a largest party and if it (BJP) can prove its majority then why not ," Dikshit told ANI here while reacting on President Mukherjee permitting Lieutenant Governor , Najeeb Jung, to explore possibilities of government formation in Delhi.

On a question about the apex court pulling up the Centre and Delhi's LG for the delay in taking decision on government formation, the former Delhi Chief Minister agreed with court's viewpoint.

"From Supreme Court's point of view, it is correct in its stand. Earlier also, they had told the same that they can form the government. Now that the President has given his nod...and if they can prove their majority, then they will form (the government)," she said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party may be asked to form a government in Delhi with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung reportedly getting the nod from President Pranab Mukherjee to invite the single largest party namely the BJP for government formation, media reports say.

The Election Commission had on Saturday announced by-polls for three assembly seats in Delhi. The by-polls to three assembly seats in Delhi, which fell vacant after their MLAs resigned following their victories in the Lok Sabha elections, will be held on November 25.

Delhi has been under President's rule since Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister on February 14 after being in office for 49 days.

The BJP won 31 seats in the 70-member house while the AAP emerged victorious in 28 seats in the Delhi Assembly polls held last year.
