Congress Party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Saturday defended former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's statement that Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi must 'speak more'.
Singhvi said there was nothing negative or adversarial about Chidambaram's statement, and added that he was in fact giving constructive suggestions.
"Nowhere has he said anything negative or adversarial. It's completely wrong to pick out a sentence here and a word there and look in isolation. If you see his entire address holistically, he is clearly trying to convey a set of constructive suggestions," Singhvi told ANI here.
Chidambaram had earlier on Friday said that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi should 'speak more' and put in action a timetable that would enable the party to play the role of 'true opposition' at a time when the morale of party cadres was 'pretty low'.
The former Union Minister had also hinted at a possibility that a person other than a member of the Gandhi family could become the president of the Congress Party.
Singhvi also accused the media of unnecessarily trying to create a situation of negativism.
"I think you are unnecessarily trying to provoke and create a situation of negativism. He has made various constructive suggestions according to his own understanding, obviously they are his own views put in his own way," Singhvi said.
